Between Thursday, 18 June 2015, and Saturday, 20 June 2015, the city of Žďár nad Sázavou will host Harp Days featuring masterclasses led by renowned harpists alongside a number of smaller, as well as biggerharp concerts of various periods, including repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music. The participants will have the opportunity to attend, either actively or passively, master classes in classical, historical, folk or jazz harp. Instruments will be provided by harp makers who will present their products at the Harp Days and also give workshops on the technical aspects of the instrument and its maintenance.


The Harp Days are open to all harp students, from complete beginners to very advanced players.

Jazz harp (Lyon & Healy)

We’ll take some jazz standards and use them as a basis to explore a little (painless) jazz theory (scales, chords, etc.), improvisation, rhythmic ideas, as well as harp-specific techniques like lever/pedal slides and pyrotechnics.“

The secret of the Bohemian harp

“I would like to show you some fascinating features of non-pedal harps of the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. How to handle low string tension and string spacing – and get lots of fun and a new world of sound out of these instruments? Our base will be dancing melodies of the time arranged with a spicy bit of dance music of today. If you are interested we can also talk a little about accompanying other instruments in a mixed ensemble. An instrument will be provided."

Children can observe the instruments, play with them, explore differences and possibilities of individual types of harps and find out that even small kids can start playing harp courageously as there are small harps available.

Classicist single-action pedal harp and arpa doppia

Maria Christina Cleary offers classes in the harp repertoire from medieval times up to the 1850's. This includes any solo or accompaniment repertoire from the medieval, renaissance, baroque and classical epochs. The participants may bring an individual piece to work on, or can join the improvisation group class. She specialises in meaning in music, historical interpretations, improvising, gesture in music.

The patron of the Harp Days Jana Boušková has prepared several truly exceptional harp delicacies for the audiences for Saturday afternoon: together with her colleague Ieuan Jones they will present Johann Sebastian Bach’s Double Concerto accompanied by 6 harps. The Flemish composer Peter Swinnen has composed a piece specifically for our Harp Days. The 3rd courtyard of the castle in Žďár nad Sázavou will see the premiere of his “Arapanja for 3 Harps”. The afternoon’s harp programme will be further enriched by a presentation of the Chinese harp gu zheng.

Passive attendance at the Harp Days from 18 to 20 June

CZK 3,000/ EUR 105

The participation fee will entitle you to passive attendance at all the music workshops, concerts and accompanying events at the Harp Days from 18 to 20 June 2015.


One-day passive attendance

CZK 1,000 / EUR 35

The participation fee will entitle you to passive attendance at all events of the Harp day of your choice.


Active attendance at a master class (30 minutes with a lecturer of your choice, 45 minutes with Maria Christina Cleary)

CZK 2,000 / EUR 60 – individual course

CZK 1,000 / EUR 35 – several active participants in the course

CZK 100 / EUR 4 – child class (45 minutes)
