Hustopeče

A town of culture and significant personalities at the heart of a region of vineyards and almond trees

Hustopeče lies in the very centre of South Moravia, in countryside bathed in warn sunshine and strewn with vineyards and orchards, including almond groves, a rarity for the local climatic conditions. These areas are especially beautiful in spring, in the period when they are in full bloom.

Hustopeče is a town of rich cultural and social events and a plentiful supply of wine cellars. It is a popular place for hikers and cyclists who use it as a starting point for trips and rides into the environs. Visitors are attracted by the picturesque landscape and natural points of interest with an extensive network of walking tracks. The Nový Mlýn Reservoirs, nature conservation area Pálava, the Lednice-Valtice area with UNESCO monuments and the unique winemaking villages in the environs are located near the town.

T. G. Masaryk and Alfons Mucha

A number of significant personalities are associated with the town of Hustopeče. The most significant of them includes the first Czechoslovak President T. G. Masaryk. His mother was born in the town and he spent his school years here with his parents. There are a number of memorial plaques, a monument and a teaching trail dedicated to him in the town. His parents are buried in the local cemetery and significant personalities who stop in Hustopeče frequently visit their grave.

Hustopeče was also often visited by the internationally renowned art nouveau painter, Alfons Mucha. He came to the town to visit his sister Anna who was married to Filip Kuber, a national revivalist for the local Czech minority and a publisher of newspapers and magazines. Alfons Mucha contributed drawings to the Hustopeče Czech periodicals and he held a magnificent exhibition in the town in 1898.

Wine, almond trees and a lookout tower

Not only grapes thrive here. One point of interest is the local almond groves which are the northernmost in Europe. In 2012, a hikers’ lookout tower offering picturesque views of the countryside was built in the middle of the almond groves. The entire protected area is located in the vicinity of the town and it offers options for walks, horse riding and cycling and for rest and relaxation in general.

The town’s historical centre

The Hustopeče Square is formed and surrounded by buildings in various historical styles. The best preserved of them includes the “U Synků” renaissance burgess’ house which was built in 1579. Nowadays, it houses the Tourist information centre, a viticulture exhibition and the Town museum and gallery.

The Dukla Square is dominated by the hundred-year-old building of the town hall and the modern building of the Church of Saint Wenceslas and Saint Agnes of Bohemia. The church was built on the site of an original ruined church and it was consecrated in 1994.

The town’s modern history honours 2000 soldiers

The end of the Second World War is recalled by the Red Army Cemetery with a massive monument by the academic sculptor Jiří Marek. Almost 2000 soldiers from the Red Army who fell when liberating the districts of Hustopeče and Mikulov are buried in the cemetery in the shade of a number of fully grown birch trees.

Many cultural, social and sports events are held in the town throughout the year. These traditions include the March Almond and Win Celebrations, the brass music event in May, June’s Concentus Moraviae classical music festival or the cycle tour through the André Countryside. The new wine celebrations which take place in the first weekend in October are also a popular event.
