Program:

Humor in music (1959, Young People´s Concerts)

What makes music funny? That’s the question conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein tackles in one of his famous  Young People’s Concerts at Carnegie Hall. Supported by the New York Philharmonic he shows that it is an easier question to ask than to answer. By using examples by Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan, Ibert, Gershwin, Haydn and others he shows that music is not only funny because of literary reasons, but for purely musical reasons. Humor makes you feel good inside. And, after all, Bernstein states, that’s what music is for.
