Boreas Quartett Bremen
Jin-Ju Baek, Elisabeth Champollion, Julia Fritz and Luise Manske completed their studies of the Recorder in 2008 in the Early Music department at the \"University of the Arts\" in Bremen, Germany, under the tutelage of Professor Han Tol. As soloists and members of different ensembles they performed in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Cyprus and Taiwan. The preparation of a benefit concert for Julia, after the robbery of some of her valuable instruments, lead to the founding of the Quartet; the proceeds of the concert were enough to replace all of the stolen items. Han Tol also took part in this memorable concert, and since then he adds a fifth recorder voice to the Quartet in programmes of five-part English consort music, by composers such as William Byrd and Christopher Tye.
In a wide variety of programs, the Quartet makes use of a carefully considered instrumentarium chosen from its rich collection consisting of 50 recorders. They provide a feast for both the eyes and the ears and serve as a convincing plea in honour of the instrument.
Luise Manske received her diploma in recorder from the Early Music Department of the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, class of Han Tol. After beginning studies on the Dulcian in 2004 with Christian Beuse, Luise moved on to the baroque bassoon in 2008. Soon after, she was admitted to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where she studied baroque bassoon with Donna Agrell and dulcian with Josep Borrás, while continuing her recorder studies with Corina Marti in the department of medieval music. As recorder player, Luise Manske has recorded with the Bremer Barock Consort for the CPO label (Classic Production Osnabrück), and performed with numerous ensembles including Weser-Renaissance Bremen. She has also participated in masterclasses with Daniel Brüggen, Gerd Lünenbürger, Lyndon Watts, Sigiswald Kuijken, Hervé Niquet and Richard Egarr.
Luise recently returned to Bremen to study the bassoon, work intensively with the BQB and perform in Germany, Europe and the rest of the world.
Julia Fritz graduated summa cum laude in 2008 as a student of Han Tol at the "Hochschule für Künste" in Bremen, studying recorder. Consequently, the institute offered her the opportunity to do a Prix d'Excellence, a highly selective advanced performance course, which she finished with distinction in 2011. She began her studies in Salzburg with Dorothee Oberlinger before moving to Bremen. At the moment she studies the cornett at the "Hochschule für Künste Bremen" under William Dongois and David Gebhard.
She won first prize in the National Austrian music competition "Prima la Musica" and was a prize winner at the International 2006 ERTA-Competition for solo recorder. In 2007 she was selected to play as a member of the European Union Baroque Orchestra, and was chosen to assist in the masterclass of Han Tol at the International Summer Academy Salzburg in the summer of 2010.
Elisabeth Champollion completed her studies of instrumental music pedagogy and recorder in Bremen with Dörte Nienstedt and Han Tol and is currently a Master student of Pierre Hamon in the Early Music department of the Lyon Conservatorium of Music. As well as her commitment to the Quartet, she is especially interested in historical music pedagogy and is researching historical teaching methods particularly in the field of improvisation. She also plays the cornet and is having a go at the baroque trombone - but neither have succeeded in replacing the passion she has for recorder.
Jin-Ju Baek was born in Korea where she studied Recorder and Piano. She is a prize-winner of several competitions for Solo Recorder in Korea and was invited to continue her studies in Germany by Christian Seher, Professor of recorder. Jin-Ju completed her studies in the Early Music department at the University of the Arts in Bremen in 2009. She is teaching annual Masterclasses in Korea and is a member of the jury for the Academy Competition in Seoul. Jin-Ju has worked as an assistant in Han Tol's concerts and Masterclasses in Korea since 2008. She is currently a student at the University of Music and Theatre in Hamburg where she studies Recorder with Peter Holtslag, as well as Harpsichord.
